No idea why Apple have to be so damn obtuse about everything! What is your current OS when you downloaded high sierra? Some time ago I downloaded the HS Installer from Appstorebut took it out of the Applications folder to an external disk and compressed it, it does not uncompress anymore, probably because HS has been updated to clear a bug some time ago. So the dmg part is not in the decompressed file. I stopped the install then copied the file to the external disk without compression.
